Position Overview

Join us in our fast-paced support to the Space Development Agency (SDA). Recognized as the Department of Defense's constructive disruptor for space acquisition, SDA delivers space-based capabilities to the joint warfighter to support terrestrial missions through development, fielding, and operation of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. SDA capitalizes on a unique business model that values speed and lowers costs by harnessing commercial development to achieve a proliferated architecture and enhance resilience. The SDA Custody layer will maintain track for left-of-launch time-critical targets and enable the creation of a targeting solution from the sensor to the warfighter in operationally relevant timelines through increasing levels of automation. We are seeking a qualified Systems Engineer to support SDA’s Custody Cell:

Responsibilities

SDA’s Custody Layer is exploring technical areas including, but not limited to

  • Improvements in automated processing and fusion of data from traditional space-based sensing payloads (e.g., visible, infrared, RF, synthetic aperture radar, and multispectral),
  • Design of a multi-phenomenology fusion architecture that enables the agile incorporation of new algorithms,
  • Identification and exploration of novel sensing phenomenologies to enable maintaining custody of threat targets,
  • Reduction in latency of processing, exploitation and dissemination of data for time sensitive targeting solutions especially for targets in a denied environment, and
  • Memory management and target hypothesis distribution from one satellite node to the next.

Individuals will support various engineering, scientific, analysis, policy, planning, and program management of Defense space activities. Specific tasks may include:

  • Provide technical support and advisory services on complex space systems integration and test efforts
  • Oversee systems engineering processes, including cost, schedule, and performance trade-offs
  • Support the development of test objectives, plans, schedules, and the execution of the tests, supporting analysis and developing reports
  • Work with multiple teams and program offices supporting the coordination, development and execution of system test plans and integration efforts to include the planning, coordinating, executing tests, deconflicting resources, analyzing test data, identifying and facilitating the resolution of issues, and documenting test results
  • Perform risk management activities, including identification and assessment, and develop risk mitigation strategies
  • Support application product managers and coordinate cross-functional teams (i.e. Government, Military, SETA, FFRDC, UARC, & Industry)
  • Develop briefings, written reports, and assessments to be provided to a variety of audiences, from working level to senior executives

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 12 years related experience.
  • Bachelors Degree required.

  • Occasional travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in progressively more difficult levels in planning and developing technical projects of a research and development an R&D nature, concerned with unique or controversial problems which have an important effect on major Department of Defense (DoD) programs.

  • Demonstrated skill in conceiving, planning, and conducting research in problem areas of considerable scope and complexity requiring unconventional or novel approaches and sophisticated research techniques.

  • Individual will have successfully demonstrated the ability to independently conduct the appropriate analysis to offer recommendations, solution, and alternatives to resolve R&D issues, concerns, problems, or methods in areas related to DOD Technical Offices.

  • Individual will have demonstrated experience in the use of advanced techniques, theories, precepts, and practices required in the field/disciplines to which he/she is providing expertise.

  • Experience working with DOD Program Managers also highly desirable. Published articles in Field of Expertise highly desirable.
